James completed his undergraduate degree in Microbiology from Trinity College Dublin in 2014, followed by a MSc degree in Biotechnology from UCD in 2015. From 2016 to 2018 James worked in Prof. Kevin O’Connor’s group as a research assistant for the Dairy Processing Technology Centre (DPTC) developing technology for the conversion of dairy waste streams to biodegradable polymers.

In 2018 James joined the UCD spin out Bioplastech, developing and scaling up a novel bioprocess to produce a highly valuable antioxidant product. In 2020 James began an MSc by research investigating ways to improve the bacterial expression of an enzyme key to the antioxidant production bioprocess.

In 2021 James was awarded an Irish Research Council Employment based Postgraduate programme scholarship. Using this award, the research which began in 2020, will be continued to PhD level.
