BiOrbic researcher Morgan Morris has won the highly competitive Universitas 21 Three Minute Thesis Competition for his presentation on using lactose for cancer therapy.

The 3MT is an academic competition developed by The University of Queensland in Australia in 2008, designed for research students to make their research more available to non-specialist audiences by effectively explaining their work in three minutes, in accessible language.

Morgan previously won the UCD 3MT back in June and went on to represent Ireland into the broader Universitas 21 3MT competition this October. Universitas 21 is an organisation that aims to bring universities across the globe together to collaborate. Morgan was pitted against winners of the 3MT globally and his presentation entitled “Lactose: A Cash Cow for Targeting Tumours” took the top spot. His research is about how lactose can be used to target cancer drugs to specific cells in the body and reduce side effects from systemic drugs.

Morgan joined BiOrbic in 2018 under the supervision of Dr Paul Evans in UCD Centre for Synthesis and Chemical Biology (CSCB). You can watch Morgan’s entry here.
