Prof. James Gaffey is co-Founder and co-Director of the Circular Bioeconomy Research Group (CircBio) at Munster Technology University. He is Adjunct Assistant Professor at University College Dublin School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science and Funded Investigator at the Research Ireland BiOrbic Bioeconomy Research Centre. James is Principal Investigator/Co-PI or coordinator on over 10 EU and nationally-funded circular bioeconomy research projects, including Rural BioReFarmeries, DOT.Green, EMBEDED, Biorefinery Glas, Farm Zero C, Bio4Africa, INFORMBIO, MainstreamBIO and many more. Much of his research focuses on piloting, demonstrating and understanding the impacts of green biorefinery technologies for the production of bio-based materials, proteins, ingredients and energy from grasses, legumes, plant residues and other feedstocks. He is academic lead on the development of Ireland's first green biorefinery pilot plant and co-lead on Irelands first integrated green biorefinery and anaerobic digestion demonstration facility. He is co-national team leader (co-NTL) on the International Energy Agency's IEA Bioenergy Task 45 collaborating with experts worldwide to understand the Climate and Sustainability Effects of Bioenergy within the broader Bioeconomy. He is a member of the Govt-appointed Expert Advisory Group to Ireland's National Bioeconomy Forum. He has over 15 years’ experience working on development of biorefineries in academia and industry.
